Job Description Summary                                                                           

A 421A or Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic is required to perform skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy trucks, and related heavy construction equipment including road graders, bulldozers, mining and agricultural equipment. Work assignments will be received in the form of oral or written work orders, but the employee is expected to determine the nature and extent of needed repairs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspect equipment in operation, test equipment, systems, and components using computerized diagnostic and other testing devices to diagnose and isolate faults
  • Adjust, repair or replace parts and components of equipment systems including fuel system, using hand tools and other specialized repair equipment
  • Test and adjust repaired systems to manufacturer's performance specifications
  • Advise company on work performed, general equipment condition and future repair requirements
  • Perform scheduled maintenance service, such as oil changes, lubrications and tune ups
  • Inspect and test mechanical units, such as engines, transmissions, axles and brake systems, to locate faults and malfunctions


Relationships

Internally, relate to other mechanics and apprentices of different classes and skills, site personnel, Fleet Coordinators, and Shop Manager.  This position reports directly to the Shop Manager.

  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel
  • Communication skills (facilitation, listening, verbal, written, presentation)
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to read, understand, and speak English at a grade 12 level
  • Well organized and able to work well under pressure
  • Ability to work independently

 

Job Specific Competencies

  • Full G license with a clean abstract
  • Proven mechanical abilities in hydraulics and electrical, including schematics and diagnostics
  • Familiarity with construction sites is an asset
  • Physical ability to lift upwards of 50lbs
  • Familiarity with hazards associated with the trade
  • Essential human competencies include hand-eye coordination, sight, smell, hearing, and vision

  • 421A Certificate of Qualification
  • Completion of secondary school or equivalent is usually required
