Job Description Summary
A Carpenter at Gateman-Milloy Inc. is responsible for all constructing and maintaining residences and buildings and making repairs to the internal and external structure and ensuring buildings are safe. Knowledge of residential and commercial construction and remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety. The Carpenter must be proficient at the following tasks: stain-grade trim work, hang doors, drill and set door hardware, set windows, layout for stairs and common rafters, able to read blueprints, and must possess mathematical skills and analytical skills necessary to do material estimates. Experience in specialty and high-end concrete forming is an asset.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Follow daily work instructions as given by the Foreman or Site Supervisor
- Maintain good working relationships with customers, subtrades and suppliers frequenting the sites
- Operate equipment and tools efficiently, slowly and safely, always being aware of potential hazards
- Dress according to the company dress code each day (hard hat, safety boots, long pants)
- Report any problems to the Foreman or Site Supervisor as soon as possible
- Return company tools and equipment to a secure area prior to leaving each day.
- Arrive for work as scheduled each day
- Maintain lunch and break schedule as specified by company policy
- Report all hours to Foreman or Site Supervisor daily
- Work well with other Gateman-Milloy Inc. team members
- Exhibit professional behavior at all times
- Perform any and all other duties as may be assigned by the Foreman or Site Supervisor
- Operate and maintain carpentry tools and equipment
- Perform drywall, boarding, taping and sanding
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements
- Supervise apprentices and other construction workers
- Perform masonry and plaster work
- Set up scaffolding as needed
- Perform other related duties, including minor duties of other trades where certification is not required and the work does not exceed own limitations
- Build items as required
- Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, using measuring tools
- Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials
- Build foundations, install floor beams, lay subflooring and erect walls and roof systems
- Follow all company policies and procedures
- Follow all “Green Book” and company safety regulations
- Fit and install trim items, such as doors, stairs, moulding and hardware
- Experience in specialty concrete forming is an asset
- Work safely at all times
Relationships
Internally, relate to Project Managers, Construction and Project Coordinators, Estimators, Supervisors, Accounting, Designers, and Division Manager. This position reports directly to the Division Manager. Externally, relate to clients, vendors and subcontractors.

Employment Credentials
- High school education preferred
- 5-7 years of experience as a Carpenter
- Certificate of Qualification, Carpenter
- A combination of over four years of work experience in the trade and some high school, college or industry courses in carpentry is usually required to be eligible for trade certification
Working Conditions
- Use of personal protection equipment will be required (e.g. hard-hat, safety boots, etc.)
- Ability to lift and manipulate objects of up to 80 lbs for 50 feet is required
- Requires ability to climb ladders or scaffolding at heights
- Hazards associated with the construction industry
- Various weather conditions associated with season
