The Maple Community Centre is the largest community centre owned by the City of Vaughan. The two-storey building is a full-service community centre, complete with a public library, pool, arena and ice rink, fitness areas, gymnasium, bocce courts, activity rooms, game rooms and bowling alley. To provide greater accessibility and flexibility within the space, the existing library was completely renovated and reduced in size to accommodate new recreational spaces, including activity rooms, a kitchenette and storage area. The universal and barrier-free washrooms and fitness-area change rooms were also fully renovated and modernized. Upgrades to the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, security, information technology, acoustics and life-safety systems revitalized the facility. Exterior improvements to the existing reading garden included accessibility upgrades, new concrete stairs and paving. Unique leaf-shaped shade structures provide continuity with the interior finishes and create a quiet, introspective space where library patrons can enjoy a good book. This phased project required maintaining access to the existing building services. Ensuring that renovation work occurred without disrupting community centre programs was extremely important to the client.
