Heavy Equipment Technician

Job Description Summary

Our Heavy Equipment Technician is required to perform skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy trucks, earth moving and related construction equipment including gasoline and diesel powered tractors, dump trucks, and bulldozers. A large part of the day is spent traveling with repairs taking place on construction sites.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Repair and adjust hydraulic pumps, safety valves, and any other necessary mechanical components
  • Inspect, repair and adjust gasoline and diesel powered units
  • Perform incidental welding operations on equipment
  • Provide troubleshooting and diagnostic repairs in heavy duty equipment
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs to equipment in order to ensure that the equipment is available, reliable, and safe to operate
  • Watch or inspect closely parts like hoses, belts, plugs fuel systems, brakes, and other possible troublesome items
  • Perform mechanical repairs on equipment in the shop and road calls when required
  • Operate automotive servicing equipment, e.g. A/C recycler, etc.
  • Installation of new and added-on equipment
  • Monitor parts usage and report on any materials issues
  • Assist in ordering replacement equipment, parts, and supplies
  • Electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting and diagnostics
  • Repair cooling, and lubrication systems
  • Repair mechanical transmissions, drive-trains and final drives
  • Repair cable-operated working attachments, winches, compressors, pumps, electric generators, etc.
  • Test repaired equipment for proper performance
  • Clean, lubricate and perform other maintenance work
  • Instruct apprentices
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service
  • Keep detailed and accurate maintenance reports and documentation
  • Accurate completion of work orders and time cards
  • Adhere to workplace safety policies, regulations and compliances
  • Communicate any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting
  • Maintain a working knowledge of changes in technology and repair techniques
  • Other mechanical repair work as required

Relationships

Internally, relate to the Fleet Manager, Fleet Administrator, Site Supervisors and Foreman, Equipment Operators, and the General Manager. This position reports directly to the Fleet Manager. Externally, relate to vendors and suppliers.

Job Specific Competencies

  • Experience with routine maintenance repairs on heavy duty equipment
  • Proven mechanical abilities in hydraulics and electrical, including schematics and diagnostics
  • Familiarity with construction sites is an asset
  • Physical ability to lift upwards of 50lbs
  • Overtime and ‘on-call’ shifts as required
  • Ability to work both indoors and out in various weather conditions
  • Familiarity with hazards associated with the trade

Employment Credentials

  • Completion of college or vocational or technical training
  • 421A  Certificate of Qualification
  • 3-5 years experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic
  • Valid driver’s licence and clean abstract is required
  • Must have own tools
