RBJ SCHLEGEL PARK AND SPORTSFIELD

KITCHENER, ON

This District Park project encompasses 15 hectares and includes lands under a Record of Site Condition. Earthworks and grading involved careful management of contaminated soils including re-use on site and disposal off site, as well as maintenance and de-commissioning of monitoring wells. A Union Gas pipeline bisects the site and required permits and associated work plans for construction within, including new utility crossings. A heritage stone farmhouse stands on the property and required relocation onto a new foundation within the proposed play precinct for re-purposing as a washroom facility. The play precinct includes a major playground, custom shade trellis and splash pad finished with coloured concrete paving. The park includes two lit artificial-turf soccer fields, FIFA Certified, including 6m height backstop fencing, bleacher seating and sheltered players benches, all on concrete paving. Natural turf venues include a full size football field and one cricket pitch including artificial turf wicket, all irrigated. Site grading required major retaining walls utilizing 1000 tonnes of guillotined armourstone. Paved and lit site roadways were constructed to City of Kitchener standards c/w parking for 175 cars. Site servicing included hydro, storm, sanitary and watermain, including street connections. Service structures include 3 custom precast buildings. All storm servicing is contained and infiltrated through a gallery comprising 23,000 tonnes of clearstone. LID features include bioswales with bio-retentionmedia. The site is finished with paved multi-use pathways, site furnishings, custom railings, extensive plantings, seed and sod.
